About

Woman struggling with addiction anxiety substance use drugs alcohol depression seeks therapy supportAddiction therapy in Ottawa:

Connect to Calm was created to help fill the need for addiction therapy in Ottawa and Ontario. Addiction therapy is a field where there are many people in need of support but not nearly enough counsellors. Addiction therapy is not only helpful for people struggling with problematic use of drugs & alcohol but can also be an important piece of recovery for people who have developed a problematic relationship to behaviours like gambling, shopping, video gaming, etc.

Clients seeking support with addiction will benefit from the harm reduction approach – they choose when and how much to reduce their substance use, drinking, shopping, gambling, or other problematic behaviours. A customized Treatment Plan & Sobriety Plan will help stay on track with goals, plan for relapses, & continue working towards recovery no matter what challenges show up.

Addiction therapy can be one piece of a complete support network to assist you with your recovery goals. In addition to individual addiction therapy, you may also want to take advantage of peer support groups (e.g., 12-Step groups like AA or SMART Recovery) & other community services. We can assist you in putting together a network and can offer referrals to programs & services you can try out.

There is a lot of overlap with addiction and other mental health challenges. In the counselling field, we often see folks with past abuse who have learned to manage their trauma reactions with addictions. These coping mechanisms made sense & may have been helpful in the short term but created negative long-term consequences. Over the years, individuals coping with trauma and addictions may have received a variety of diagnoses (like Borderline Personality Disorder).

Connect to Calm hopes to help some of these people find a path forward to a life that is meaningful and without severe distress.
